The top riding application Careem is suffering due to COVID-19 as it laid off 536 employees. Mudassir Sheikha, Careem’s co-founder Careem said that they wanted to delay this decision but their resources were exhausted and more than 80% of the business was down and unfortunately, recovery time is unknown. The only way to secure Careem, in the long run, is to move towards self-sustainability within a reasonable time frame.
The ride app had to suspend its operations in different regions due to the global pandemic. Moreover, the demand for the service has been very low due to the lockdown as many people are staying indoors and only using their conveyance to go out whenever necessary.
The company hasn’t shared any other detail regarding the layoff. Non tech employees have taken the hit and company had to make sure that there isn’t any distinction between tech and non tech colleagues. Letting go of employees has been very difficult but the app itself has been suffering a lot due to no demand of the service.
